Sanctuary Body Art

Negative experience: I got my snake bites done 6 months ago at a different shop but the ball jewellery kept falling off so I came to sanctuary body art to get the jewellery down sized and to get the internal threaded bars for security. I recently fell ill and one side of my lip started to swell as my immune system was attacking one of my piercings on my right side of my lip. I began to swell and continued throughout the day to the point the jewellery was cutting into the tissue in the back of my lip. I attempted to call the studio six times with no one picking up ( and unable to leave a voice message) I also emailed them, all during work hours with the hope I could save the piercing with a longer bar but I got no response and I had to go to hospital

Fantastic experience: Got a tattoo by the Gentle Goth, she was absolutely amazing. Patient when I was deciding what I wanted but also spoke me through it and gave suggestions and advice. The tattoo itself is absolutely fabulous, exceedingly pleased with it and the service provided. I also have had a few piercings done and again staff were lovely and talked through everything with me.

Fantastic experience: Becca is absolutely lovely - patient and kind. She did one of my piercings last year, and every time I’ve visited this studio, the team has been incredible. They always take the time to offer care, support, and thoughtful advice - whether it’s for a new piercing, a removal, or anything else you might need. Love their unique jewellery selection as well

Fantastic experience: Guys I had 9 pierced already and I go my second mid lobe pierced recently with Becca. I'm writing this review now is because I want to wait for few days to see how it's going, I can say that Becca did a perfect job, better than any other piercer I've been to in Edinburgh and London. I rarely wrote a review on Google, but I really need to say that thanks Becca, I really like my new piercing

Fantastic experience: Really fantastic experience. First time piercing and went for 4 lobe piercings. Really calm, thoughtful and informative artist (Becca). Was talked through everything. No suprises and no stress. Really happy with the aftercare and the final result. Not sure I'm getting more piercings but if I was I would definitely come back. Would totally recommend this studio.

Fantastic experience: Becca was very welcoming and made me feel at ease after a very stressful day. I came in for an impromptu visit having an idea of what I wanted. Becca done a consultation with me and helped me understand what work abd what wouldn't. I had full trust in her work even after only meeting her 10 minutes before. She kept me calm and asked how I would prefer for her to go about the piercings understanding my fear of needles and the need to just get it done, less chatter . Thrilled with my piercings and was gutted when she told me I had to wait 6 weeks . Fantastic

Fantastic experience: I just got tattooed with Larissa, she made me beautiful Studio Ghibli reference pieces ! My experience in the tattoo studio was perfect ! Larissa is so nice and makes her client feel very comfortable, she listens and cleary is a talented artist ! Her work impressed me and her way of tattoing too ! Fantastic experience: Had such a great time at Sanctuary Body Art getting my first tattoo from Liz Minelli, everyone was super friendly and really made me feel welcome/comfortable during my time in the studio. Liz is my favourite artist out there and her professionalism + incredible talent + kindness really made my first tattoo experience memorable. Fantastic experience: Had a jewellery change with Hazel today it was such a great experience! Really like her professionalism and attention to detail. She was really nice throughout an entire appointment and gave me a excellent advice about piercing care. I should also mention an atmosphere in a studio that helped me to feel relaxed and comfortable.

Fantastic experience: Sanctuary is easily my favourite studio in the city. The staff are exceptionally friendly, the atmosphere is always great, and everything about the studio is done to the top level. Rae (dandy tattoo) is hands down my favourite artist, bar none. We've been working on a large scale piece for several years now, and their work is always phenomenal, so inventive and detailed. If it weren't going on my body forever, I'd want their work hanging in the Louvre. They always make sessions extremely easy, fun and it's truly a delight to get more amazing art from this amazing artist.

Fantastic experience: I've had ear piercings and a tattoo from Sanctuary, Ross (the owner and who did my piercings) is the loveliest person, very professional and informative while being super nice, and the studio generally is a clean, welcoming and comforting environment. Larissa did my (first ever) tattoo and as well as being an incredible artist is the sweetest and most considerate person, she talked me through everything and ensured I was informed and felt safe and comfortable throughout. I can't recommend Sanctuary enough.

Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful experience getting my sternum piece here! Liz was super understanding and patient with me and did an absolutely fantastic job! I couldn't have felt more comfortable, listened to, and supported throughout my numerous appointments. I also have to mention the other staff who were incredibly respectful and professional all throughout. Hands down would recommend this place to anyone, whether it's your first or 100th tattoo.

Fantastic experience: I messaged Larissa that I would only be in Edinburgh a few days, and she managed to work me in and design a beautiful Lorien Leaf tattoo. I absolutely love it and she was so amazing to work with. She was very calming, since it was my first tattoo, and very friendly. I would be happy to be tattooed again by her.

Fantastic experience: Got tattooed by Liz a couple of weeks back. It turned out amazing, she really listened to my ideas and made a super cool piece from it! Everyone in the studio was lovely and made me feel really comfortable, I think I was there for 7/8 hours and it honestly felt like no time at all! I have booked in again with Liz already and cant wait to get back up to Scotland for some more work!

Fantastic experience: I will ALWAYS go to Larissa for my tattoos. She is so lovely, encouraging and understanding of anxiety. She wants you to be comfortable and feel good/safe. She's also SO talented and drew me and tattooed on me the perfect tattoo. I wish it would let me attach a photo!

I found Larissa on Instagram and chose her for my first tattoo. What a beautiful and kind soul she is! Fantastic experience: My own photos do not do this justice, but I got this absolutely stunning free-hand piece done by Larissa at this studio. I was on holidays from Australia and was astounded that Larissa was able to fit me in whilst I was in town! The entire experience was wonderful and my tattoo was everything I had envisioned in my head. I absolutely couldn’t be happier! It has healed nicely and is my most complimented tattoo. Thank you!!

Fantastic experience: I got a tattoo by Liz and it was the best experience ever. I'd never gotten a big tattoo before, so we set up a consultation to discuss design and placement. I immediately knew it was going to be great. My tattoo was spread over two sessions, and I felt at ease the entire time. Liz is so easy to talk to, made me feel super comfortable and checked in if I went a bit quieter, if I needed a break. I can't wait for my next tattoo!

The owner, who is incredibly welcoming, sets the tone for the entire experience. Everyone is super friendly and likes to come over for a wee chat during the session. The studio itself is impeccably clean and well-maintained. It's clear that both Liz and everyone at Sanctuary take great pride in their space. I cannot recommend Liz and the studio enough!

Fantastic experience: Liz is an exceptional tattoo artist! From the moment I shared my idea with her, she displayed genuine interest and took it to the next level. The project she created left me speechless and I couldn't be happier with the result. Throughout the day Liz was kind and patient with me (and my wiggles on the table) and she’s just fun to hang out with. I can’t wait for the next tattoo with her! Fantastic experience: Can't recommend Hazel enough. I had 3 piercings 6 months ago. Process was fantastic, Hazel took a long time to explain beforehand what would happen, helped me choose pieces and placement, then explaining aftercare. The piercing was unproblematic and I love my piercings. I've had a few issues recently (my fault not anything wrong with the piercing process) and they got me back in quickly for a piercing troubleshooting appointment. Hazel helped me with the issue in about 8 minutes. I cannot recommend Hazel enough.

Fantastic experience: I’d like to start this Review by explaining I’ve got 2 sleeves but by no means does that mean I know the first thing about how much time energy and prep work goes into a single tattoo and how amazing it is that people are capable of creating such incredible art on someone forever. I’m 28 years old, and have been interested in tattooing for near enough my whole life, the reason I’ve only 2 sleeves is because I am very particular over the art and person I’d allow to tattoo me. I’ve been to Sanctuary body art over 20 times now, and before I get into why I’ve been so many times I’d like to thank Ross for being such an incredible host and making me feel welcome, tattoo studios have a reputation for being an intimidating place to be and Sanctuary completely changed my whole view on this and I can’t thank Ross and the team of extremely talented artists there enough for this. The reason I’ve been so many times is I’m trying to learn how to tattoo professionally, whilst working a full time job this has its challenges, everyone there has been friendly and offer there help and are interested in seeing my progress, and it’s a lovely feeling to have that care and support. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Alisha and Larry at work they’re nothing but polite patient with their clients and hugely accommodating to any needs the client have! So talented and Incredible people to watch at work! But the main person I’m really writing this review for is the lady and legend who started my sleeve and whilst talking to me, offered to help me learn. Her name is Liz and she’s truly one of the most talent and loveliest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, this is evident as everyone I’ve met whilst Liz tattooed, left with a huge smile on there face. Liz has not only drawn and tattooed beautiful tattoos on my arm but offered her time and patience to help me grow and develop even with my busy schedule and hers, and hasn’t and won’t take a penny off me for her time. Honestly I could go on for days about how incredible she is but just look at her instagram and you’ll see her talent, hard work and passion for the art she makes for people.. Overall Sanctuary is exactly that a Sanctuary for people to go feel comfortable and get awesome life changing tattoos, and piercings.. Ross thank you for putting up with me lurking about and guys keep up that incredible work you do! Liz, thank you for your time and the tattoos there with EVERY penny and I’ll no doubt see you soon!

Fantastic experience: I have gotten tattoos for Liz multiple times and I love getting tattooed by her! She is very kind and understanding and makes me feel very comfortable about all aspects of the process. She is also very kind and understanding when I am struggling to sit well. Her work is always amazing and she is one of the few artists I keep going back to for pieces. I cannot recommend her enough. The studio itself is very clean and airy and everyone there is extremely professional.

Fantastic experience: I have had 5 tattoos done by Liz and every single time the experience has been amazing. Let's get the obvious out of the way first: Liz is a fantastic artist who takes pride in her work. When figuring the placement out for my under the knee tattoo, she spent time making sure that it was perfect. She made sure that, not only that I was happy with it but that she was aswell. She makes you feel welcome in her tattooing space and if you want a chat then she will happily do that, but if that's not what you want, she's happy to tattoo you in silence. She checks in with you regularly and makes sure you're comfortable throughout the session. As someone who has multiple tattoos, Liz is by far one of the most talented artists I have been tattooed by. I cannot recommend her enough.

Fantastic experience: I am in the process of cover up from Liz, her work is outstanding and true to her artwork, she is wonderfully talented and an amazing artist. Also a kind and accomodating person, Made me feel very relaxed and comfortable before and during the tattoo. The studio atmosphere is so welcoming and all the staff are very friendly and inclusive. Fantastic experience: Sanctuary is a safe and welcoming studio with friendly artists and piercers alike. In particular, I come here for Liz Minellis work. I have been getting tattooed by Liz for the last 2+ years and never been disappointed. Every session is comfortable and never felt uneasy or unsafe, each and every time Liz's work is meticulous and beautiful. Any time I have tapped out or needed a break, I have never been made to feel as though I am weak or wasting time. Every person who walks in is treated with respect and care. If you are looking for a black gothic horror work, Liz is your next stop in Edinburgh.

Fantastic experience: Recently I was tattooed by Liz for a full sleeve, partial coverup blackout sleeve project and some Halloween flash. Liz made me feel super comfortable and was really warm at the same time as being highly professional. Her work is outstanding and she went at a pace that took into account my pain tolerance/comfort. She was happy to take breaks when I needed to and was brilliant to chat to during the sitting. She also gave really comprehensive aftercare advice which has led to the first few sessions on my sleeve healing really well. I can’t wait to finish the project! Thanks Liz, you’re the best!

Fantastic experience: I have been tattooed by Liz at Sanctuary a few times now and can only say fantastic things about her and her work. From the initial consultations to the work being completed I felt listened too and had the most professional experience. At my first session Liz explained the process to me, helping me feel at safe and at ease with the proces. Throughout all of the consultations I was able to bring my ideas to the table and discuss with Liz how they can be tweaked to get the best result possible only as individual pieces but how they can be completed in such a way to allow for them to flow together into a larger sleeve. Fantastic experience: I got a coverup tattoo from Liz (@lizminellitattoo) last year. Start to finish the experience was amazing! Liz listened to all of my ideas and spoke to me in-depth about the different options I had to cover up the old tattoo using them. I am absolutely inlove with the design she created! I had such a good time on the day of the tattoo as I was instantly comfortable around Liz, she’s a genuinely lovely person. I’ll definitely be back for another tattoo <3

Fantastic experience: Most of my tattoos have come from Liz. Her artwork is astounding and she can form the ideas I have into beautiful and powerful pieces. She also bounces ideas back and forth of potential changes and additions we can implement to improve the art/ really make it stand out or look even better. There isn’t an artist I trust to do this as much as I do Liz. So far we have an almost completed sleeve which features 3 main pieces that join together to make one composition. Her dark art style lent itself perfectly to my alternative/ dark imagery and ideas. I still have a lot I want to do and I know who I will be going to. Sessions with her are pleasant and seem to go by rather quickly. Considering that I almost always have full days booked in that is not easy to achieve. I cannot recommend her enough. I’ve attached some photos of the progress so far.

Fantastic experience: My appointment was with Liz for a tattoo that I’d been meaning to get during the pandemic. Liz is very professional, friendly and takes time to understand what you want, how it should look like and is very clear about the procedure. Plus, she explains what she uses, why and how. She’s very chatty so that really helps keep your mind away from any pain you may experience. The salon is clean, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and everyone is really welcoming. I plan to go to Liz for another tattoo this year.

Fantastic experience: I cannot recommend Sanctuary enough to anyone! The friendliest bunch of people I've ever met, always make you feel welcome and are always super professional. Currently working on a large piece with Liz and the whole process has been very professional, from the booking process the tattoo experience itself Easy to use booking form where I passed over some ideas/size/placement etc and Liz welcomed me in for a consultation so we could go over all the details as this was also a cover-up of some older tattoo. She drew up some doodles on my arm so we could see where everything would end up and the whole process was very reassuring I'd chosen the right person for my tattoo Spent 8 hours in the studio with her on the first session and she made it a lovely experience along with all the other artists in that day! They took the time to have a chat whilst I was getting tattooed and didn't exclude me whilst they spoke to Liz which I can find can often happen in other places (not that anyone needs to talk to someone else's client but it just feels more welcoming and relaxing) There was a couple hours where it was just Liz and I in the studio and I felt completely at ease as she's such a lovely professional person to be around. It felt like I was just having a catch up with and old friend and getting a bonus badass tattoo at the same time! All aftercare details were laid out to me clearly and I was sent a link from Liz once I'd left that just reiterated everything she'd spoke to me about in regards to the aftercare just in case I forgot anything which is a lovely touch as sometimes after a long day it's easy to forget! You can really tell she loves her job by how much effort she puts in for her clients and I really cannot stress enough how amazing she is at what she does! Her tattoo corner also has some amazing artwork and oddities in which is a lovely distraction when you're trying to pretend you're not in pain loads to have a look-see at Highly highly recommend Liz and honestly, just anyone who works at Sanctuary! I've only been tattooed by Liz as of now but the work everyone here puts out is top notch, high quality and beautiful

Fantastic experience: Liz is a fantastic ink artist. This is my second tattoo she has done and its fabulous. It took a week to heal with no issues. Liz is very professional and easy to talk to about what type of tattoo I wanted, which she drew herself prefectly. I have a few conditions that cause chronic pain and even then getting tattooed by her is always such a pleasant experience, she's got a very gentle hand! Fantastic experience: I’ve had a few tattoos from Liz and she’s always been amazing (so much so that I can’t stop going back). Her space in Sanctuary is beautiful and super clean. Liz has such a calming energy so is great at putting me at ease and checks in while also giving me space to chill out. The final piece is absolutely stunning and exactly what I wanted! It's been 3 months since I finished the piece and it looks amazing.

Fantastic experience: I have spent many a day with Liz and the guys from Sanctuary and every day has been a wonderful and relaxed experience. Liz is a wonderful, genuine and kind soul with an incredible talent and eye for tattoo artistry. Her designs flow and she is an expert in making the art fit the body and not the other way around. Her aftercare advice is superb, and my tattoos have always healed perfectly following this, and I have not required many touch ups. Following the aftercare advice is incredibly important, as you need to take responsibility in healing your own piece of art.

Fantastic experience: I got to Sanctuary Body Art with a nose piercing that hadn't been done properly and Hazel helped me with loads of advice, attention and regular checks to get it back to health. I probably would have given up on it had it not been for her help! She predicted every single step in the healing process and was so attentive every time I went there. Super amazing place, honestly! Fantastic experience: Had a perfect piercing experience with Hazel (@botanicalpiercer)! Shop was impeccably clean, and all of Hazels sanitation practices were spot on. She explained the whole process to me, showed me how she steralises the jewellery, and talked me through each step whilst piercing my nose. She did an amazing job pairing up my new nose piercing to my old (and not professionally pierced...) one, and I'm over the moon with the result! Will definitely be back when I'm back in Edinburgh for more awesome and caring piercing experiences!

Fantastic experience: I got a nostril piercing with Hazel about 6 months ago and have since been back for a downsize and a jewellery change. I was quite nervous at first but Hazel was really friendly and professional and put me at ease. Fantastic experience: I've been tattooed by Lauren several times and I will never be tattooed by anyone else now. Not only is she a fantastic tattooist, she is also an amazing artist and has somehow captured exactly what was in my head, every single time. I've never had any issues with my tattoos and I believe that's down to Lauren's care and skill as an artist. She is a complete professional. The studio itself is scrupulously clean, has a great atmosphere and I've always been made to feel very welcome. It really is a sanctuary. If I could give 10 stars, I would!

Fantastic experience: I got paired nostril piercings with Hazel today and it was a genuinely great experience. It was my first foray into the world of fine jewellery piercings and Hazel really took the time to explain my options and cater to my budget, as well as take me through the whole process step-by-step while answering my questions. Plus, the other studio staff were really nice, and it's an airy and inviting space. I love my new piercings and Hazel seemed just as excited about them as I was!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic experience. Hazel was *amazing* - so friendly, put me at ease immediately & really made my septum piercing a memory I won’t forget. Hazel, from the second I walked in, genuinely seemed to care how I was feeling & took her time finding the perfect placement “sweet spot” for my piercing. I probably felt the most relaxed I’ve ever felt for a piercing (& I’ve had a few!) .. I also felt no pain - though I know that can be different for everyone. I would 100% trust Hazel with my future piercings - I’ve even told my mum I will book her in to redo her nose, as my experience was so good. Studio was clean, light & airy. Fantastic experience: Alice (@oneskinnyleg) did my first 2 tattoos in one go. She was so kind and understood quickly I was very anxious. She was on board to write a sentence in Portuguese, and then draw my cat's paw <3. I love my tattoos so much! The entire process was smooth, and after wards they healed exactly as per Alice's instructions. Many thanks - am ready to return for my next 5 tattoos - lol!

Fantastic experience: Both times I visited I was made to feel so at home! Everyone at the studio is so welcoming, lovely and friendly. I’m normally such a shy and anxious person but I felt very much at ease talking to everyone there. Liz has such a warming aura she’s extremely kind and made the hours go by fast! The whole process from start to finish was very thorough. She answered all my queries (I wasn’t afraid to ask her anything) and explained everything really clearly. I felt we built a connection that she made sure we were exactly on the same page and she couldn’t have created my vision any better! I had a siren piece done on my shin and the composition was so creative and cleverly done to fit everything in proportionately as well as flowing nicely on my leg. Liz was also extremely considerate in the process ie allowing it to be easily connected to future tattoos, giving her opinion on placement in regards to working with an existing tattoo and having just the right amount of detail for the size so that it would age well. The texture is incredible and the piece was done with such meticulous care. I absolutely love and appreciate having small hidden details/ touches in the piece as it makes it unique and interesting to look at! You can million percent tell how passionate and committed to her work she is

Fantastic experience: Visited here twice, first for a flash tattoo from Alisha who is so nice and friendly as well as being talented(cat head flowers). The second time I visited was for touch ups from Liz on a piece she had already tattooed on me(Red Panda. Sphynx cat was the 1st piece by Liz). Liz is uber talented and such a great person & I can't wait to get more. And the studio itself is welcoming and nicely laid out.

Fantastic experience: I had an appointment with Hazel yesterday to get my nose pierced and it was such a positive experience. She is so lovely! Hazel talked me through everything before hand but also explained what she was doing, as she was doing it. She was so calming and put me at ease straight away. Fantastic experience: I visited Hazel on two separate occasions for a conch and flat piercing. Hazel is very friendly but also very informative and clear at explaining the whole process. They were my best piercing experiences. Also, I had some beautiful pieces and Hazel does the best in choosing the best pieces from creators across the industry and also the jewellery she produces is amazing and I’ve received so many compliments on them. I returned for a downsize (later than I should!) and Hazel was very gracious- even though I was annoyed at my perfectionist self! It really shows that Hazel loves what she does, I feel she genuinely wants you to have a piercing you love, which will serve you for as long as you want it! This is why aftercare is explained so well, and you can feel that. I would recommend Hazel to everyone! It’s an amazing studio (have also been tattooed there), light, spacious and inclusive.

Fantastic experience: I had my rook pierced by Hazel exactly 8 weeks ago. She was so precise with her placement and incredibly thourogh and professional. She also changed out my helix piercing for me. I had had a large bump at the back of my helix and Hazel changed the bar and the bump has completely gone. She was so lovely and really took her time to make sure I was happy with the placement with my piercing. She seemed genuinely excited by the results too which I loved. She was a brilliant piercer who made me feel at ease and I will definetly be back

Fantastic experience: Such a positive experience! Long story short, I chummed a friend who saw Hazel to get her tragus repierced. Hazel was absolutely amazing. She made my friend feel totally at ease and communicated clearly at every stage of the process. Hazel was also kind of enough to have a look at my industrial piercing site (I thought it had closed up, but turns out it hasn’t), so she was able to change the jewellery and we both came away very happy! I was recommended Hazel from a friend who had her nostril pierced last year and we have patiently waited 1 year until my daughter turned 16, to book in. Hazel was so informed, gave us lots of information and was very accommodating. Fantastic experience: The entire studio and team are beyond a delight! It is a very welcoming environment and one where you are able to ask any and all questions. I have been pierced by Hazel multiple times (6 so far) as well as her helping save and settle previous piercings. Her service is extremely informative and relaxing, she explains everything that is going on and makes sure you are completely on board with it all. I’ve gone in with exact plans of what I want as well as no real vision, both scenarios I have left over the moon! Her selection of jewellery from handmade to bought in is unmatched. From just walking in the door I have never felt more comfortable in a studio, everyone is so kind and knowledgeable and great chat most importantly!!
