Experiencia fantástica: I've had great experiences at this place. These included Jet who gave me a great tattoo and, most recently, with Justin, who gave me a great piercing. Both were professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. Great services here

Experiencia negativa: There are some good artist here but dont use Jet the 1st warning should have been when they wanted a deposit but I went to meet jet for a cover up i already had something picked out and he ofcourse didnt understand the mission he drew up something simple to cover it and then proceed to layer shading after shading so much so I was almost in tears after 3 hrs and 3 weeks later now I have scaring it still itches and burns some this is a warning for future customers I went back for the next sesson and the creep said I was wasting his time maybe the shop owner should look into Jets work more

Experiencia fantástica: I am obsessed with Jamie! She added my husband’s birth flower to a floral piece on my arm that I originally started six years ago, and blended it so seamlessly you’d never know it wasn’t all done at the same time. Her energy is so relaxing and she made me feel so comfortable. We laughed a lot! The entire studio is a vibe for reals I’m beyond happy with how my tattoo turned out and can’t wait to go back for my next piece!

Experiencia fantástica: My bestie and I got piercings together a couple of months ago. Justin did both of our piercings and he was absolutely fantastic. Super chill vibe, explained everything from start to finish, and was quick with the needle. The jewelry choices were so cute and we were so glad to have come here. My friend got her double helix and I got my conch done. Good explanation of aftercare as well on top of a little goodie bag with directions on aftercare and even a cheat sheet on how different jewelry pieces come apart so you can change it when ready. Everyone in the shop was incredibly kind and very welcoming.

Experiencia fantástica: I had an appointment to get a triple helix done. Something I've been wanting for a long time. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door. Ashley was great at helping me pick out jewelry. She went over how to care for my piercing and went over any questions i had. We chatted the whole time she was piercing me which helped. The placement of the piercing was perfect. I wear glasses and she made sure my glasses wouldn't bump my peircing. I'm excited to go back for more work. I also highly recommend Justin the other piercer. Very knowledgeable and will tell you what will work best for your anatomy. For tattoos Paul is awesome. Will help you pick a design that will look good for years. Hes very personable and wants to know his clients.

I'm currently in the process of getting a large tattoo that is a fusion of pieces into a work of art that represents my children - this is THE most meaningful tattoo I will ever have (ahem - no pressure, Jamie). She has been incredible, understanding, professional, and meticulous. We've had 2 sessions so far and I am already obsessed with this piece. She is giving it so much more life than I could have even imagined. Beyond perfect in her artistic rendition of my requests. She is also the most gentle artist I've encountered and has a super warm personality. The folks at Mad Ethel's are pretty fun and welcoming. I even got some kisses today (the Hershey's ones). The shop is aesthetically a super cool space. And if you forget your ear buds, no worries. They gotchu homie. Shop music is on point.

Experiencia fantástica: Justin did a cartilage piercing for me a couple of months ago. He explained everything really well. I was able to purchase the saline for aftercare during the visit which was super convenient. The piercing is healing beautifully and I will definitely be back once I decide on my next one. Experiencia fantástica: I just wanted to send a very special shoutout to Justin (piercer) who helped us on very short notice—my 9 year old had an earring that got enveloped by her ear! She was in serious pain and terrified. I was not prepared for this aspect of parenting. Justin spent well over a patient hour explaining and gently coaxing and waiting, often just waiting, for her to calm down enough for him to be able to even look at her ear. Apparently he’s a magician because two candy canes later we left with it safely removed and changed out. Y’all, and then after this, the kindest human he is only charged for a consult. I recognize that’s not something he can probably normally do but say all that to say this highly experienced professional also has a very kind heart and that makes us want to come back for all our piercing needs. I’m deathly afraid of needles so I won’t personally but think everyone else reading this should lol it should also be noted he was very well-versed and understanding of how to approach such a traumatic situation within the context of neurodiversity! I can’t thank him/y’all enough! And highly, highly recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: I’ve been getting two small tattoos on my arms removed. I’ve been working with Sarahanne, I’ve had five sessions and they’re already almost gone! She is so kind and has done such an amazing job. She explains everything, answers any questions, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The photos are the tattoo immediately after getting it and then the other is after only four sessions. You can see how light it’s gotten.

I had a few older piercings from other places that weren't healing right and he helped me change them to better jewelery during my piercing appointment. The shop was beautiful and clean. It came out perfect! Jamie is over-the-top professional and skilled. Did I mention fast!! In 2 sessions, we covered scaling, placement, outlining, and shading within 3-4 hours.

Experiencia fantástica: I recently finished getting a large tattoo done by Paul and he did an amazing job! I had a portrait of my beloved dog Mary with flowers around her done on my leg/side of the calf. I also had an old smiley face tattoo on my ankle that he covered up with more roses and he incorporated it all very will with the whole tattoo. It turned out so beautiful and he truly captured my dog in the portrait. He was very nice and made sure I was comfortable through the whole process. The shop is also very clean and welcoming and everyone has been friendly. I'll definitely be back!

Experiencia negativa: I stopped by hoping to browse and buy some jewelry, but was turned away because the piercer wasn’t there. There was no sign or notice online that they wouldn’t be available, and the staff didn’t seem interested in helping or offering any alternatives. To top it off, the parking situation is awful — hard to find a spot and poorly marked. Overall, a total waste of time and effort. Was hopping I had found a regular place for my tattoo/piercing needs but guess not.

Experiencia negativa: Pierced my eyebrow too close to the bone, didnt change gloves in between using door handles, the same that I had used. Asked for specific jewelery, put in the wrong one & charged me $10 for correcting his mistake.

Justin was super professional, knowledgeable, followed all safety protocols and let us know in detail exactly how to take care of the piercing. He joked with her, made her feel comfortable and was just a genuinely nice guy. It was a great experience. I highly recommend him!

Experiencia fantástica: I went to get my nose repierced because I had previously had it pierced at different place and the piercing was lower than I would’ve liked for a hoop in my nostril. Justin was kind and engaging, and found a hoop that was small enough for the current placement, and ordered a smaller hoop for me to make it even better. He could’ve made a lot more money by piercing it again, but was super ethical and awesome. I couldn’t be more grateful.

The atmosphere is very pleasant, comfortable & eclectic (not creepy in the least, like many shops unfortunately are). Everyone is very friendly & I love the comradery between the staff. These folks are true artists & help bring your idea designs to full fruition. Ember has been my artist both times & does absolutely beautiful work!

I had a consultation and told her what I wanted, and made my appointment. I went yesterday for my first session and I have to say, I'm so blown away. She took all my ideas and made 1 absolutely amazing memorial masterpiece. All the outlining is done and some shading, and I'll go back in 2 weeks for another session. This shop is really awesome. It's so homey... you feel very comfortable. The artists and staff are all so very nice. Such a great experience. I am so overly excited to go back and see Ember once again. Experiencia negativa: Spent $170 on a helix and belly piercing. both didn't heal properly; they hurt more after getting pierced than initial piercing process. had to go to the ER to get belly jewelry removed due to swelling and embedding cus of the short ass bar and jewels (on antibiotics). don't go to the guy, he seems knowledgeable but isn't and threw a tantrum when I called him out on his mistake

I had misinterpreted the consulting appointment details and, after explanation, understand that I may have been incorrect in my understanding. Changing my rating as friends of mine have expressed Mad Ethel's great work and should not be dinged because of this. Based on their experiences, changing the 1 star to a 5. Original review below: While I did not have any issue with the receptionist or booking the appointment (completely normal to do so), the artist I consulted with left a very bad impression with me. For starters, I was asked to email all the details to the shop before the consultation. I did so, including style, dimensions, references. etc. On the day of the appointment, while we waited in the lobby, the artist comes out, still sipping on his coffee (understandable, it was early). Instead of pulling us aside or into a room to discuss, he just stood in the lobby and asked "so what are you looking for?" it was clear from the beginning that the artist had not taken time to review ANY of the material I had provided in the email before the consultation. I began to explain everything, again, including pulling up the same references I provided. Rather than have an engaging conversation, or discuss his thoughts, I received generic answers (with one small suggestion about the head of the piece). "yep, i can do that for you. go ahead and book it with the receptionist". Then, he walked away. It was impersonal and, frankly, left me feeling like what I wanted to have done (and would show for the rest of my life) was unimportant to him. I understand not every piece is meant to be special for an artist, but a little respect for those who feel passionate about something and approach you for collaboration would have been appreciated. Overall, a very disappointing experience which left me with a negative impression. I've been working on collecting a tattoo from different artists within the Raleigh area. Unfortunately, Mad Ethel's will not be a part of that collection.

Justin was incredibly professional, he was quick and according to my girlfriend it was relatively painless, and we appreciated that Justin didn't try to push anything we didn't need aftercare-wise. Experiencia negativa: Really disappointing and expensive experience. Got a helix which promptly fell out and bought several pieces of jewelry that were not the size I wanted. On top of this, the front desk lady was also so unfriendly I never want to go back and get my helix fixed. Huge waste of hundreds of dollars. Hope other folx don’t have to deal with this in the future, but the reviews suggest they will.

Experiencia fantástica: Clinton and Paul are amazing! I spent at least 9 hours in their shop and they do great work. Clinton did a clematis vine tattoo around my upper thigh and a blackberry cover up tattoo on my knee. His work is gorgeous, he is extremely artistic and knows how to make the piece contour your body. Thank you to Chantille for coordinating my second appointment and making me feel welcomed. They have snacks/candy/drinks available at all times. I highly recommend Mad Ethel’s!

The customer service is amazing and the services provided are professional, transparent and creative. My oldest daughter got her belly piercing! Got my first tattoo from Ember in 2020 and even though I have moved two hours away from Raleigh I made the drive back for another tattoo. I added on to the original tattoo and once again I am Super Happy with the final result. Staff are friendly, professional, and creative. They listen to what you want , offer suggestions and get your approval before doing the work. Prices are very reasonable and I would suggest anyone to give them your business. You will be happy.

Experiencia negativa: Went to get a tattoo tonight, but the young lady working behind the desk was so disgustingly rude and arrogant that I couldn’t give them my business. Went down the street and found another tattoo shop where they were very friendly and customer oriented. Little does she know that I own a local professional sports team and I will forbid my players to give this shop business. Insert Pretty Women scene…huge mistake!

The wait-time on that Saturday for walk-ins was a good hour, everything was explained well, the studio was clean and has a great interior style, too. Justin gave me tips on where to place the piercings on the helix and ear lobe, the whole process was quick and good, I could ask questions and felt comfortable and in good hands the whole time.

They were AWESOME!!we had Justin do our piercings and he was funny, attentive, and great about us making sure we liked the placing and rings we chose! Atmosphere of Mad Ethels was super cool as well! If ever in Raleigh again would def go back for another piercing or tattoo!

Experiencia fantástica: Came in yesterday for the first time, and I was so impressed with this shop. Everyone I encountered was friendly, helpful, and down to earth. I’m pretty socially awkward in new situations, but my artist Paul was just delightful and was super easy to talk to. He made very quick (and precise!) work of a pretty decent-sized piece. I’m in love with the results and will absolutely be coming back.

Experiencia fantástica: I got my nip piercings at this lovely place and Ashley was so wonderful and accommodating! She has such a warm demeanor that will instantly make you feel comfortable and is so kind and non-judgmental. She will walk you through exactly what she's doing when she's working so you know what to expect/feel. The piercing hurt a lot for me which was expected so I was a little tearful from the pain and she let me have all the time I need after the procedure. I didn't feel rushed at all and felt like I could sit there for as long as I needed to get myself re-oriented. I want to come back to get my ears and bellybutton done again :)

Experiencia negativa: Edit: was looking to get another tattoo and realized I never saw the response from the shop. I never said that I didn’t receive a confirmation I said I wasn’t sure, seeing as communication was extremely spotty. She said that it would be no problem if I saw her artwork beforehand but never specified that it meant she wouldn’t be able to send them over, I would have understood that. I didn’t appreciate the condescending tone that comes across in all of your responses to negative reviews. Humans make mistakes and that includes artists, if Jamie felt that she didn’t want to tattoo me after that first “encounter” it would’ve been nice to hear from her. Thanks! I was really hoping to leave a positive review here and I’m extremely disappointed that’s not the case. I searched for years to find an artist to work with on 3-4 extremely sentimental pieces. I found Jamie Hotalen at Mad Ethel’s and contacted them about an appointment. Getting scheduled was a bit of a nightmare in that I couldn’t get in touch with anyone however, after that it seemed to fall apart. It was well over a month of messaging the artist about what I was thinking and asking to see their work (which I never got) and waiting days or weeks for a response without hearing anything. I wasn’t sure if my appointment was confirmed, there was no sketch of the tattoo for me to see, there was none of her work sent to me to see either. Extremely frustrated I prepare for the appointment, I tried to confirm the day or two prior and of course got no response and even messaged the day of to make sure I went to the correct location (I did not). When I showed up I was ignored until I pushed my way through to the receptionist. After over half an hour of waiting (with the two family members these tattoos were for waiting with me) and not hearing a single thing from the artist about how long it was going to be or anything I decided I needed a step outside. I ended up leaving after pressuring and finding out the artist wouldn’t be ready for another 30-50 minutes. I never once got to speak with Jamie over the phone, in person, nothing. I was supposed to get a call back to reschedule (yeah, right) but I’m not holding my breath. This was a very frustrating and time-wasting experience and I am so so disappointed in the customer service I was faced with. I’m 21 and work in a vape shop so I understand having rude customers but I’ve not seen service like this in a long time.

Experiencia fantástica: Paul is a great artist! He listened to what I wanted, and tweaked it of course to what would look best! Had a great time being tattooed by Paul over three sessions, all while talking and watching some great tv. Great way to block out the discomfort of being tattooed. The final product is better than I could have imagined! Thanks Paul! I’ll be back soon! Also want to mention the rest of the Mad Ethel team! Everyone is a lot of fun, very kind, and welcoming! From what I saw of their art, they all have a immense amount of talent as well!

Experiencia fantástica: Babyyyy - Justin, the piercer will get you RIGHT!!!! I had a tummy tuck about a year and a half ago. I came to Justin 6 months after and he told me to wait until my belly bottom finished healing and had more circulation. I waited and came back to my boo and he was ready for me!!! It was painless, quick, and clean. He talked me through the whole process and kept me busy while he took care of me. He appreciated my humor and my craziness, so we had a good time!!

Experiencia fantástica: I had tattoo removal done by Sarahanne! I can’t recommend her enough! She is the most kind and caring person I’ve ever met! She makes you feel very comfortable and explains everything in detail, I have been twice and the first time I was terrified it was going to hurt but it was nowhere near as bad as I anticipated! SHE IS FAST!!! You blink and she’s done! The world is a better place with her in it.

Did a consult and told Paul what I was thinking and he came up with an awesome design that included the elements I wanted. He did a fantastic job and I couldn't be more pleased with the finished tattoo - it's absolutely beautiful. It's a great place, great location and great artists that I highly recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: I brought my two teen daughters (16 & 18) for second piercings to the Glenwood Avenue location. The vibe was very cool, comfortable and clean. It was well maintained, every step of the process was well explained, and their piercer Ashley was very personable and put us all at ease. It was a relatively quick and easy process without feeling rushed. I would highly recommend for all ages considering a piercing and both daughters said it was far more comfortable than they remember their initial piercings done with a piercing gun at the Dr’s office being.

Experiencia fantástica: My husband and I wanted a couples tattoo. No names because of kiss of death to the relationship and all. So we decided on Nightmare before Christmas. Jamie was great. We had a consultation and said do your thing. Day of we loved the design. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The music was fun. In the end we got tattoos we love and couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend. Sending two of our sons their way. Jet, is now working on dragon tattoos we started years ago, and although they are not done yet we are super happy with the vision so far.

They were all booked for today but I was a walk in and the wait wasn’t long at all! Receptionist was super nice and Ashley, who did my piercing was amazing! Experiencia positiva: I had my consult. And made an appt for my first tattoo. I was told he didn't want to do another butterfly, but agreed to anyway after he had suggested a female artist, but she didn't have availability until June. I just hope my tattoo doesn't reflect his not wanting to do another butterfly. It's a memorial tat to my Mom who loved them. Other than that it was a good meeting and other family members had tattoos there. If his work is good I have 3 more I want to get. Not butterflies.

Experiencia fantástica: I do not hand out five stars lightly, and these stars are specific to the artist I collaborate for my ink. Let’s talk about Mad Ethel’s @mad_ethels first though. I prefer the Glenwood location, because it’s the only location I’ve been to. This is a very clean shop with some cool decor (wish the popcorn machine was always operable). I can tell the owner and people working there take pride in their crafts. It is also a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. They are sticklers for rules- best to follow along… overall, I would highly recommend anyone with ink or piercing needs to check this place out. This has been the only repeat business for ink that I have ever used and for great reason! Jet… Jet (@triadtatoos) is great at what he does. A methodical and precise conductor of skin stabbing equipment. You walk away feeling great about the work he has accomplished, knowing the skin will heal nicely. (Always follow aftercare instructions from your artist, they know what they are doing). Check out Jets portfolio (either on Mad Ethel’s website or his instagram (@triadtattoos). Fine lines, black & grey, what ever your needs, he will expertly apply your ideas. I feel Jet puts more effort into his work than most knowing his brand is what you’re wearing. And there is always great banter in ‘the office’ while there too.

I myself, deal with people for a living, let me tell you, Marian has some of the best customer service and attention to detail I have seen. He will tell you what he thinks would look good, which will guide you in the right direction. What started as a consultation(He created the drawing the same day with my input of what i wanted) turned into an awesome tattoo. Hands down this will be my artist going forward. Even during the tattoo, he made sure I wasn't in to much pain or uncomfortable. He's newer to the Raleigh area so, I would definitely get on his schedule sometime soon because he will be booked up. I had 2 people actually come in while I was getting tattooed. THey saw him working on my peice and wanted him to do their pieces too. Definitely Check him out on instagram @marian_sagath I love it!!!
