Skin Deep Tattoo and Piercing Waikiki

Fantastic experience: While visiting Hawaii, four of us went in with our requests for tattoos and we made an appointment. Everyone was super amazing. They loved our ideas and they made them even better than we imagined. We all left so happy and had a great time while we were there. One of us also got a piercing. Loved how they talked through what was going on and what to expect. Wonderful experience in both sides of the shop!! There is a reason they are the oldest and most successful tattoo shop in Hawaii!!

Fantastic experience: So, while in Hawaii, and while there I wanted to get a new tattoo. I visited 4 different tattoo locations...and none of them felt frienly enough for what i was looking for. THEN I found Skin Deep Tattoo - and I knew this was the place for me. Gabby at the front desk, was so friendly, helpful and fun to chat with. Great first impressions for sure!!!! Ava, the tattoo artist who did my work (actually a new tattoo and updated an old one was absolutely AMAZING. She exceeded my expectations and was a joy to visit with while she did her art. I can not say enough good things about my experience. I am so happy with the outcome. Better than I ever expected. Thanks so much. Can't wait to visit again next time I am in Hawaii.

Kameron & Gaby also helped with our experience and I was very impressed with the level of respect and professionalism they had for customers. Fantastic experience: Got my conch pierced by Krista while I was visiting Waikiki almost a month ago. She was super friendly and made sure I had the correct anatomy for it and so far it’s healing super well. If I’m ever back in Waikiki I’d totally come back again!

Fantastic experience: I am in love with the tattoo that Anna, the owner, did. She did an amazing job adding shading to my lotus flower as well as adding the hibiscus next to it! I gave her full artistic control and she exceeded my expectations! She was so sweet and instantly made me feel relaxed, comfortable and safe. Most importantly she tattooed very gently at no point was I in a lot of pain. I also loved how she was able to match the lotus and the hibiscus seamlessly. She took the time to accommodate my request and add whimsical lines and detailing to the tattoos and was very detail oriented. I also loved how clean the tattoo shop, everyone is very friendly and helpful. I would fly back to Oahu just to get a tattoo from this shop again. I highly recommend! First picture is the tattoo fully healed and the other two pictures were taken right after my appointment. Took 5 days to fully heal and there was barely any scabbing organs little to no bleeding.

Fantastic experience: Clean shop, great people, right on the beach. I walked in a bunch of shops before I found this spot. Kai was my artist and he killed it! He has a great Polynesian style and other styles from what I saw. He did my pineapple last April and I went back this week to get some more work. I will go back again next time I visit; definitely would recommend!

Fantastic experience: Walked in on a Saturday night. Very friendly, fast, and extremely clean. They were super cool to chill and talk with. I got a pig and chicken on the tops of my feet to match with Auntie Ona’s, Ava did the ink, and she is amazing. Super gentle and very clean work. I would 100% come back just to have work done by these folks. They also did a matching chicken on my brother’s arm. The atmosphere here is truly one of a kind. Negative experience: I’ve been on the fence about writing this review for a while, assuming it may have been a one off but decided I should. For some back story, I have 18 ear piercing, including a double conch on my other side. I’ve done some at home, some at other shops and had my vertical industrial done at skin deep. Jessica was very nice and seemed knowledgeably, but when she did my industrial she used the same needle twice, starting at the back of the top of my ear, and then through the bottom. She also missed her mark by quite a bit, which I was okay with and has happened to me before but she didn’t admit it directly to me or told me that she had. I was very taken aback by using the same needle twice though, from my knowledge, talking to other piercers and reading this is something that should never happen and is extremely frowned upon. I’ve healed some of my piercings with no issues at all, and have had piercings bumps on others. I know the vertical industrial is an advanced piercing and I never expected this one to be easy at all. I also understand this is one that can easily take over a year, and am trying to be more lenient because of this. I’ve had it a little over two months and the top has been healing well, but the bottom (conch) has given me major issues unlike any other piercing I have had. My other piercers have said it’s nearly 100% chance that the issues I’m having is caused by her forcing an already used and bent needle back through my ear, resulting in way more damage and tearing than necessary to my tissue. Especially considering I have so many piercings, including two in the same spot on my other ear. I have never had swelling and oozing like this, it has been more painful than any other one as well. I have cleaned this piercing twice a day like clockwork, and have babied it beyond belief. I don’t mean to write this as any kind of slander, and even if my healing issues are completely on me and unrelated to anything done during the piercing process, I would hope for my piercer to be honest with me about missing her mark, and at the absolute bare minimum not use a single use needle two times. As kind as they were, I couldn’t see myself trusting this shop for piercings again. I’m by no means saying you shouldn’t, but just sharing my experience with them.

Fantastic experience: Jessica is AMAZING. I got my belly button pierced on a whim on vacation, and she treated me like I was her only client, took time to understand the shape of my belly button before piercing. I’ve had many piercings and this was the ONLY one that never got infected or agitated at all. I kept waiting for that painful/puss/gross period and it never happened. It’s perfectly straight, which I’ve also never had, and didn’t experience a single negative side effect she warned me about. Hands down the BEST.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been in Hawaii on a long-term work assignment since May 1st. I decided I wanted to get a tattoo (my first one) while I was here that would commemorate the trip. My husband had a tattoo done there a few weeks before I did. We both had our work done by Barbara, who was nothing short of amazing. After seeing what she’d done for him I decided I wanted her to do my first tattoo. I came to her with an idea and wanted some changes to it to incorporate an outline of the islands. Barbara made a suggestion of how the islands should be incorporated as well as another element of the tattoo that I fell in love with immediately. I couldn’t be happier with the way the tattoo turned out. Everyone that we’ve dealt with has been absolutely amazing, including the piercing shop staff where I had my ears pierced. Danica did my piercings and she did a great job making sure they were symmetrical and making sure I knew how to take care of them after they were done. I’m so happy with the tattoo that Barbara did that my husband and I have appointments on Saturday to have another one done. I would definitely recommend this place very highly!

The staff was wicked friendly, helped us fine-tune the designs we wanted, and kept the whole experience relaxed and easy — exactly the vibe you want when you’re getting artwork that’s gonna be with you forever. The shop was cleaner than a brand-new pair of Bean Boots, with that smooth island breeze and laid-back Hawai‘i feel that instantly puts you in the right mindset. My artist, Jay, was awesome. Super steady hand, super skilled, and clearly takes pride in the work. Even after a year and a half, the tattoo still looks sharp and solid, which says everything you need to know about the quality here. We felt right at home the whole time, and I’d go back in a heartbeat next time we’re in Waikiki. If you want wicked good ink with a chill Hawai‘i vibe and top-tier artists, this is your spot, no question.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I came to for a few days and kept walking past Skin Deep tattoos and decided to check them out. I ended deciding to get a small tattoo to mark our trip. Kai drew me a small tattoo that I liked and an hour later we were finished. Kai is definitely great at his craft. I will definitely go back if we come here again.

Negative experience: Had a very traumatic cartilage piercing experience here. This was my 6th&7th ear piercing, my normal guy was OOT and my other spot is in the middle of a move so I tried this place out. For starters, the piercer didn’t use any iodine or forceps. They had me slouching on the table instead of lying down or lowering the seat, to be in a better position. They didn’t pierce with my breath, they just jammed the needle through like they were playing darts. I was bleeding everywhere and had to go through a few packs of gauze before it slowed down. They didn’t set up well and had the tray far from the table so they had one hand holding and tugging on the needle in my ear while they were reaching across their body for the gauze and studs . Once they got the stud onto the needle they pulled it back through but the gauge was a different size and I could hear it pop as it was forced back through. It was honestly more painful than the initial piercing itself. Once the piercing was on they were squeezing my ear so hard to try to get the bleeding to stop. It was so horrible and painful, I had to take over and tell them the all the tugging and squeezing was very very sore. Finally, they quoted me a different price before they rang me up. Initially saying the basic studs were included in the price but then added an extra $50 saying the studs were an additional cost. I ended up seeing another piercer downtown that day because the experience was so bad. I wanted to get a second opinion on the piercings and have them checked out. They were shocked to see I was still bleeding and how much swelling was happening due to their carelessness. They also let me know they have not heard anything positive from other clients about this studio further confirming my experience. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, go literally anywhere else.

Negative experience: Over three years ago I came to skin deep to get a navel piercing and my experience was not the best. Long story short I got my piercing done here and 6 months later it rejected due to the piercer not evaluating my anatomy correctly and incorrectly piercing my navel. I learned this recently after doing a navel consultation somewhere else with hope that I could re-pierce my navel again, and they told me my anatomy and keloid (happened when my body rejected my piercing) would not allow me to have a navel piercing again. I don’t usually write reviews but this is something that I want to warn those interested in getting piercings done here and I don’t wish this for anyone else because I have a large keloid on my navel that I wish I didn’t have. If the piercer had examined my navel more correctly this could have been avoided. Please take my experience as a warning and look elsewhere for piercings.

First time visiting the location. The front desk girls were very friendly & respectful, and we had no problem at all. We requested Ava & so grateful we both were able to get a tattoo done by her. Fantastic experience: Kai was the best tattoo artist. I could have asked for my ideal artist and Kai exceeded that expectation in every way. As this is his profession, he knew exactly how to achieve my dream outcome and boy did he do that. He knew this piece was a tribute piece and I had an idea of what I wanted. I sent him some design ideas and also asked him to use some artistic freedom and do what he could to put his touch on it and make the piece even more meaningful than it was as I was also only honeymoon with my wife at the time. In under 24 hours Kai took my ideas and put them all together into a piece of art that I immediately knew was what I wanted him to tattoo on me. He was intensional in every way, from placement of the tattoo so it could be seen from any angle of approach, so it was lined up no matter how my arm twisted and turned, so it was symmetrical and the proper size, and overall he couldn’t have put any more effort into the piece than he did. The entire time I spent with Kai is exactly how you’d want a tattoo appointment to go. It felt as if I was hanging out with a buddy and we were catching up with each other after an extended period of time being away. He even invited my wife over to join us after she was finished getting her tattoo. Kai communicated what he was doing technique wise while tattooing and the importance of the Polynesian symbols and their translations in English. Once we got done Kai took it upon himself to touch up another piece I had. He did not have to take the extra time to work on that piece as it was not his design or work , however he wanted to take care of me as the line work was a little faded. The shop was closed at that point and he worked on it regardless. If you’re planning on going to get a tat here, I wouldn’t ask for anyone other than Kai to do it. My tattoo had no issues healing up and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience getting a larger tattoo. Thanks for ending our honeymoon on a high note, I’ve gotten nothing but compliments and high praise.

Fantastic experience: This shop is absolutely amazing. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and she was so attentive and helpful with planning my appointment. I was a walk in so I expected to be told there were no appointments so I was thrilled to be able to make this work during my unplanned trip. My artist was Brian and he took my inspo pics and made it his own which to me makes it that much more special. This was a very sentimental piece I’ve been putting off and he made it perfect and magical. Thanks you guys for a great experience. I’ll definitely come back when I’m on the island again.

Fantastic experience: What an amazing shop!!! I went in on Sunday knowing that I was looking to get a tattoo on Tuesday night ( the night before my kids and I left the island). I went in with an idea for my tattoo. Up front was a wonderful woman named Anna! I spoke with her about my idea , where I wanted it, and when. Anna knew what I wanted and did a quick rough sketch to pass along to the artist that would be tattooing me “The Amazing Kai Yamada”. I gave my deposit and away I went, waiting for my appointment Tuesday night. Tonight, I went into the shop and met “The Amazing Kai Yamada”. Kai had my piece drawn up and ready to go, just needed to be fitted to the where I wanted on my body (upper left ribs/ lower armpit). Kai fitted the design and away we went!!! Kai was very professional, humble, kind, and an amazing artist! I will recommend this shop and Kai to anyone who visits this beautiful island of Oahu! ~Mahalo~

Fantastic experience: Great Shop!! Skin Deep and the people who work here are among the best. We felt a part of their Ohana they have built. Kai was so nice to work with, his experience comes through in his art. He does beautiful work and took the time to answer all my questions. Angie is organized, precise and and ball of sunshine. She worked with us on our schedule and communicated effectively for our best experience ( less than 24hr notice) I am beyond glad we decided to go in. If you're in the area and toying with the idea of getting ink, you won't regret going in either.

Fantastic experience: We had a great time here, service was immaculate artists were phenomenal, my wife and I were both walk ins and they sat us down immediately with custom designs and got to work. Whole ordeal took about an hour for 2 walk in custom tattoos. The aftercare was great even gave us kisses, (jk) but they both healed within 3 days. The attention to detail was amazing. Highly recommend.

Negative experience: The owner Tony sucks. I waited almost 5 years to come back to this place because the last nose stud I got never budged. I came in for a new one and it fell out after two weeks. He started our conversation by walking out and saying “so you want me to give you free jewelry huh”? Incredibly condescending. I then explained and he told me it’s impossible for it to fall out and that it had to have caught on something and ripped out. Pretty sure I would have felt that or had a similar issue for the last 5 years. Just admit you’re wrong and didn’t place it correctly. I won’t come back even though I planned on only using them and spent 300 the day I came in for new jewelry. I found a place online called body art forms that sell the same brand (neonatal) for a fraction of the cost. It’s okay to admit it when you’re wrong and made a mistake. It’s not okay to make your customer pay for it. Do better Tony.

Fantastic experience: I came to visit Skin Deep all the way from Louisville. On reasonably short notice, Kai Yamada took care of a delicate piece I wanted. It was a matching piece that my dad had. Kai quickly drew it out to size and began stencilling me but not before welcoming me and telling me a bit about himself in the friendliest manner shared by everyone at the shop on 03/16/2025. The end result came quick but the most important thing was it came out perfect. So perfect in fact that when I flew back to Kentucky, my wife booked us flights to go back to Hawaii this coming August. She is excited to get a memorable tattoo and I'm hope I can book another appointment with Kai for this coming August. Hands down best tattoo shop I've ever been to. Highly recommended to anybody looking for amazing work and aloha spirit. 10/10 for Kai and the family working at the shop that day.

Fantastic experience: My wife went for a Polynesian style tattoo during our stay on Honolulu with Skin Deep, and she’s very happy abt it so that tells the story. She worked with designer Kai, who’s killing it all the way thru, and he’s native Hawaiian so he’s very versed in Polynesian culture. After some healthy conversation Kai put out a design that’s filled with meaningful elements. Having all said, if you are feeling to add Hawaiian style tattoo, go Skin Deep and talk to Kai, you will be happy.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I went to honolulu for our anniversary I wanted to get a cover up tattoo on my hand. As a vacation souvenir. I picked a turtle and told him the price I hoped to stay at and Kai drew something up and it was even better and more detailed than i expected. I couldn't be more happy. Fantastic experience: Skin deep in Waikiki I have had an amazing experience at this tattoo studio we had originally booked at another one closer to our hotel but were let down so I decided to try my luck as a walk in before I flew home the next day . I wasn’t disappointed from the first step into this location I was welcomed and made to feel welcome it was such a chill yet professional environment. The artist wasn’t there yet but the front desk 100 percent knew from what I described and needed she assigned the best fit . I came back at appointment time and consulted gave him a bit more time to tweak the design and then got into it . 4 odd hours later I had my vision on my arm . It was a lot of money. but well worth the effort and time and detail to be honest I couldn’t be more happy ! The whole team were amazing friendly and made me feel relaxed . I can’t recommend them enough massive respect to Paully really took his time to make sure my tattoo was perfect . He honestly thought about every detail and his reasoning behind it .

The piercer who helped me out was great, she got me fixed up and back to my vacation in no time. The shop was very clean and professional, I’d definitely recommend them.

Positive experience: The staff were very friendly. My husband and I explained what we wanted to the artist an and our intentions. Kai did well ensuring our tattoo was meaningful with a Hawaiian twist and within budget. He also made sure we were satisfied with the final result before explaining the aftercare routine. I’d definitely recommend seeing them if you are ever in the area Waikiki area!

Fantastic experience: 3 of us went in for tattoos. Artists Kris & Brian were absolutely amazing! While my daughter & SIL were experienced, it was my first time getting a tattoo. Kris was extremely chill & understanding & his humor made the experience more relaxing & enjoyable. Brian must have been just as great as my daughter fell asleep. Fantastic experience: My husband and I had such an amazing experience at Skin Deep Tattoo!!! Our artist was a guest artist from Italy, Alessandro. He was a very good tattooer, his lines are so clean and crisp! And he was willing to work with us on the style of tattoo that we wanted, he redrew it for us a couple of times. All of the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, especially the front desk girl Angie! She was very communicative with the timeframe and amount for the artwork, and she was helpful for us to find some local eats!! Next time we're on the island, we'll be back to Skin Deep, for sure!!

Fantastic experience: I come to Honolulu frequently for work and I try to make Skin Deep a must go to place when I'm in town. I have had work done by both Bernardo and Kai and both pieces have come out above expectations. Angie is great to have around to help with pricing, sizing and a good laugh. Fantastic experience: Walked-in and got 2 piercings, done within 30 minutes. Danica was awesome! She was friendly, fast, and professional. Everything was clean and sterilized. Great experience. The only painful part was finding parking. Hint, there's a paid parking area on the street behind the shop. Bernardo did an amazing job on my forearm. Looks better than I imagined it would. Everyone was great and made the process easy, clean, safe, and memorable. I highly recommend Skin Deep.

Fantastic experience: This is my fourth tattoo from Skin Deep in Waikiki! Maggie was very patient, kind & professional. She assisted me in my very specific needs and paired me up with Franco based on my requests. Franco is an Excellent tattoo artist. He listened to my requests and put together a gorgeous tattoo for me of Diamond Head with a banner beneath with the word ‘Aloha’! It looks amazing and Franco did incredible work. All four of my tattoos were done at Skin Deep, and it all started 20 years ago with Anna! They are both truly amazing artists!!

Two of us did a walk in and it was super easy and we were only there for around 30 minutes per tattoo! Staff was incredibly friendly and cool! Fantastic experience: Mr. Bronson helped my daughter and I, and it was great. Everyone was very professional and the whole experience was great. Daughter got her earlobes pierced and I had my left helix done. One warning, parking is DIFFICULT to find. Plan on arriving in the area at least 30 min early to find parking, then walking to the shop.
