Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience today with Katrina , I’ve looked at her IG for quite a while, all of her work looks beautiful and original. I’m glad that I found her, a true artist who appreciates different cultures and has passion for all! I also received a lot of fun facts and information about the tattoo community from her ☺️. I immediately scheduled more appointments with her ! Take advantage of her current rate because she’s going to be popular ✨. At the same time the owner Julie did a phenomenal realism daisy on a client, thats for sure the best flower I’ve seen, just like those beautiful you find on IG and use them as reference photos. I also had a true fine line exceptional tattoo from Federica who used to work here before she moved back to Italy. I believe all other artists are also very talented.

Fantastic experience: Got tattooed by Katrina a few weeks ago, and immediately scheduled a second appointment because I was so happy with her work. She does a fantastic job designing tattoos according to the placement and client’s anatomy - her art looks like it belongs exactly where she puts it. The shop itself is really clean (and well decorated!), staff are friendly and offer a wide range of art styles. Booking process and communication was made super easy through the website, overall 10/10 tattoo shop experience, can’t wait for the next one !!

Fantastic experience: Hailly Martin did my cover up tattoo and it turned out absolutely amazing. Hailly is such a low key and chill artist who wants to make sure you are getting something you love. Hailly was able to give me the perfect size and shape for my orca to cover my previous tattoo and it could not have been better. The vibes at electric umbrella are so relaxing and all the other artists are super friendly. It is all around such a great place, with great people.

Fantastic experience: My best buddy and i walked in today as we passed through from Vancouver to Cortes Island. We walked in and asked for a walk in for two matching tattoos. The energy in this place was INSTANTLY friendly and welcoming. Ive never felt this comfortable and invited into a shop where the artists all engaged with one another and customers without pretense or attitude. Absolutely a recommendation if you want ink in Nanaimo Croissants ARE a food group

Great bedside manner, gentle, and artisticly...so insanely good!!! I get compliments from strangers all the time, people saying they didn't know a tattoo could be so classy. He did my daughter's first as well- even larger and it is GORGEOUS!!!

Negative experience: The Electric Tattoo has some great artists don’t get me wrong. I would avoid working with Ross Gray, however. He is rude, spiteful, and his work is basic.

Fantastic experience: I couldn't say anything bad about this shop. My go-to is Sean. He has done 9 tattoos of mine. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't check out who else is doing great stuff. Ross has a great all-around style. He has done a tattoo on both me and my wife, both fine line black and grey. If you want some amazing realism, then you need to check out Julie's work! No matter who you go with you will be treated like gold. There will be lots of laughs, fun music and probably see Sean dance at some point.

Fantastic experience: If I could rate this studio 10 stars I would! Loved the decor, vibes, and staff! Got a lovely tattoo done by the wonderful apprentice Kat today- and myself as well as friends + family couldn’t believe she was an apprentice by the amazing state of her work! I will ABSOLUTELY be coming here for all my tattoos whilst living on the island! I’ve never been quite so impressed by an artist, and I have 11 other tattoos- most of which not done by apprentices… but Kat has outdone them all! Outstanding job Kat. Fantastic experience: Electric Umbrella and all the staff who work there are absolutely amazing! Their store is immaculate and you can tell how much they love what they do and care about cleanliness and creating a safe space for everyone to enjoy. The atmosphere is spicy, funky, awesome and lighthearted! I have always felt so welcome, relaxed and respected. The quirky banter and tunes is something I look forward to every time! I’ve gotten a few amazing pieces done by Julie (owner) and she did an incredible job fixing another piece that was done incorrectly from a different artist in a different city. Thank you so much to Julie and all her amazing staff for all the incredible things you guys do and I’m sure all the not so fun stuff you guys respectfully handle! Fantastic experience: I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience of getting a tattoo. I was a bit nervous at first but the clan at Electric made me feel relaxed and welcome. Kat walked me through the process and I was very happy with the outcome. I'm now contemplating my third tattoo and will not hesitate to return to my friends at Electric Umbrella.

Fantastic experience: I am absolutely blow away by the skill and professionalism of my experience with Electric Umbrella Tattoo Studio, and specifically Kat @electrickatrina. She is, without a doubt, the best person I have ever received at tattoo from. From the initial design and booking, it was a seamless transition into paying a deposit and heading down to Nanaimo for my work of art. I was greeted with smiles. friendly nods, and genuine conversation by all the staff members. After some last-minute adjustments and sizing I was positioned comfortably for a 5 hour session. The conversation was light and entertaining, with a few other people getting tattoos, an atmosphere of community and acceptance was easily established. The tattoo was fast to heal, looks amazing, and I can’t wait to get another. Kat never failed to impress me at every turn, and I look forward to following this apprentice’s career. Cheers!

Negative experience: Gonna be so so honest because it's still something that bugs me till this day. I went in for a last minute birthday tattoo a while back and I wanted to get 3 different small tattoos. I have alot of anxiety in general and but was definitely extra nervous to get tatted. So I was extra nervy and kinda overstimulated.. At first I wanted to get two small symmetrical tattoos on either side of my chest but decided against because the placement was a little off and just didn't look how I pictured. After kindof going through the process of deciding to switch things up and just get one of the two tats on my chest, the vibes in the shop felt really strange and I felt like I was we being made fun of...i assumed this just cuz of the different looks and smirks being thrown at me and after being told to just "go in the bathroom and take a long long good look at myself in the mirror" (when there was already a mirror in the hallway) i started having really bad anxiety And just felt kinda insecure and a bit dissociated.. when I came out basically the whole shop just giggled and stared at me... For whatever reason I decided to still go through with it and unfortunately the tattoo came out really crooked and spotty with the saturation of black.. While I was having my tattoos done my artist( Ross)just randomly started talking about at risk youth on drugs and how young adults just like me need help these days and kinda just giggled... Just for reference I don't use drugs I just smoke on occasion so I didn't really get it at all to be honest. The artist knew I had anxiety but aside from that, I never met the man so it was just over all kindof a wack experience... I definitely take full accountability and my anxiety and lack of attention to detail and just over all back bone isn't anyone else's fault but mine so at the end of the day I got the tattoo I signed up for but I just feel like the whole experience itself should have gone different regardless of the end results.

Fantastic experience: I got tatted by Kat for my very first tattoo, which was in memory of a friend I had lost a few months back. I contacted her through her link for booking and she was very swift and professional yet friendly with her replies and straightforward about the process, answering any questions I had. She showed me the design, and executed it exactly how I imagined it. The studio environment was very welcoming, clean and comforting. Kat explained the procedure, allowing me to ask any questions I had as I was getting my first tattoo and of course- was nervous as anyone else would be. We had some interests in common which made the process a lot more enjoyable and it was awesome I was able to talk to her throughout it which helped with getting my mind off the pain- even though it was not that bad. The owner, I apologize forgetting her name, was also there that day and was helpful in getting a second opinion for placement and such. Overall, amazing studio, would love to come get tatted again if I’m in the area! Highly recommend!

Negative experience: I booked a tattoo with Katrina and a handful of a things we're extremely unprofessional and ended up costing both of us a lot of wasted time and money. Upon arrival she admitted she forgot to write down most of what I said In the consultation lol.The result was a design that had none of the key elements we had talked about. Most of this could have been avoided but she failed to send me the design before the tattoo as she promised. When this got brought up she essentially said I should not have agreed to see the design for the first time in the studio.... extremely disappointing to have this be pinned on me. When I showed her the reference photos I'd sent in an email after the consultation she quickly said it was not a style she could do nor was it within her abilities to draw.... 2 months into this being booked. About $60 in travel and about 10 hrs with ferry lines etc to get there over a weekend. I was then proceeded to be cautioned as a client to not pick artists to do a design they can't do.... how am I meant to respond to this?

Fantastic experience: Finally got the opportunity to get tattooed by Kat at Electric umbrella and I left with exactly what I was looking for! Kat was only 3 months on skin the time of me getting my tattoo and she slayed it, i recommend anyone to get tattooed by her. During my experience getting tattooed by Kat you can feel the supportive and silly energy that’s been curated at the shop, I felt no hesitation coming in to get tattooed here. It is a very clean, comfortable and welcoming space. I got the opportunity to chat with everyone working and other clients getting tattooed, listened to good music and left with a killer tattoo! I will definitely be coming back very soon <3

Negative experience: The following review is my personal opinion. UPDATE: The response to this review is disingenuous and alarming and sounds like an attempt at gaslighting me. • "I am sorry you felt like you weren’t considered" is not a real apology. • "It is up to you to find a place that won’t overwhelm you if you are sensitive in any way" and your refusal "to change that environment for one person" dismisses the core idea of accommodation. • I was polite at all times and have the screenshots of my messages to prove it. Hearing something you don't like isn't tantamount to being "antagonized." • I merely *asked* to adjust one setting; I have never tried to take the stylus. • I was also never offered the opportunity to reschedule. • Finally, "from that point on it is fully up to you to state your needs and boundaries" is the rhetoric of an abuser. One's ability to self-advocate can change at any time; you have a responsibility to check in periodically. The short version is: Avoid this tattoo studio. I paid $1,350.80 (after taxes and tips) only to be treated as a nuisance by people who lack basic human decency. Caveat emptor. In the beginning, I messaged the studio and was connected with Hailly. I wanted a tattoo of a fern on my left arm. We met and discussed a drawing. This was my first tattoo and I didn't know (and wasn't told) of any tattoo etiquette. However, when I'd asked Hailly for permission to slightly adjust the saturation of a drawing that was to go on *my* skin permanently she bristled. After Hailly corrected the drawing, we'd agreed on a date. I was told that Thursdays would be quieter (I'd explained that I am autistic and I have sensitivity to noise). When the day came, I was anxious and excited. I enjoyed the colourful tattoo art that was hanging all around. Everything seemed to be fine. In retrospect, the first and second visit went well only because I didn't ask for anything out of the ordinary and behaved quietly and politely. When I'd arrived for my touch-up, everything in the immediate environment has changed. It was loud and crowded. This was an autistic person's worst nightmare. I should've left. However, I suddenly happened to find myself overwhelmed and dissociated; in that moment, I was unable to advocate for myself. I'd agreed to everything just to get out of there. I was lucky that we just followed our plan from before. Later, when I'd privately messaged Hailly, I politely explained what happened and concluded my message with a request to discuss potential accommodations. Hailly's response was "I would highly recommend getting your next tattoo at a private studio, where it's quieter and the artist has more control over the setting. Every shop is different, and I think finding a shop that fits your needs would be a better outcome for you." Translation: We feel inconvenienced by your requests and we don't want people with special needs, such as yourself, as our clients. I felt devastated. There was no real attempt at empathy, discussion, or compromise. This pattern continued when I wrote the tattoo studio owner, Julie, who wrote back, "I helped with the response. Unfortunately as a busy multi artist space there are some environmental things we cannot control." I couldn't believe my eyes. It's not that you can't, control these things, Julie—it's that you *don't want* to. If Thrifty Foods can organize a low-sensory shopping experience, you can choose a day to turn off the music, turn down the lights, space out some tables, and show some empathy to someone who has spent her life never asking for what she needs out of fear of being seen as a burden. You should be ashamed—doubly so because of your heartless response to my review. Let me help you out: I believe the words you were looking for were, "We're sorry that you found yourself needing help but we're unable for ask for it. We want to accommodate everyone. What could we have done better?" Because of the hypocrisy, callousness, and irrationality the owner and staff have shown, I strongly suggest staying away from The Electric Umbrella Tattoo Studio.

Fantastic experience: Honestly where do I even start!...The atmosphere is immaculate, the location is fantastic, each and every artist there is incredibly talented and exceptionaly friendly!. I have gotten over 30 tattoos from this establishment, and every single time I do it is an absolute pleasure!. The owner (Julie) is a gem! And her attitude towards her clients is one of warmth and professionalism! Her laugh and personality keep me coming back and feeling extremely welcome!. Then there is Katrina! She's the shops apprentice ( although you wouldn't know it looking at her quality of tattoos that she is producing! ) they are absolutely incredible!, she has a way of making her clients so very heard and comfortable whilst getting some rad work!! and her designs always blow my expectations out the water! Then there is Sean, Federica and Ross! , they are all so talented, friendly and professional! And each go above and beyond for there clients!, It's very important to feel welcomed by everyone whilst getting a tattoo, and each and every artist at electric umbrella exceeds in doing this!. I would and have recommended electric umbrella to friends and family, and they have had the same experience as I have! 20/10.

Negative experience: After 8 months my tattoo was faded to the point that I just had it fixed elsewhere. It never was the right color, as my artist said she didn't have any lavender or pale purple color. It started out kinda dark-ish grey and like I said, soon looked like an old grey tattoo.

I brought in a sample of a sports crest I wanted but allowed some freedom with an attached rose coming from the crest. Federica was amazing. The design she produced was exactly what I was looking for. The studio was clean and the conversations enlightened the experience. Absolutely love the tattoo.

Fantastic experience: I walked in on one of the worst days I had in a long while, asking for anytime and whatever someone can do. I left with a beautiful piece of art designed and tattooed on the fly by Sean. Electric Umbrella has a beautiful inviting space and amazing atmosphere and I would recommend to anyone looking for an above and beyond experience.

Fantastic experience: Can't rate them highly enough! Julie has done all five of my pieces and I get endless compliments about all of them. It is a super chill atmosphere in the shop with impeccable cleanliness standards. This place is perfect for the heavily tatted and first timers alike and I will not go anywhere else in Nanaimo! Picture posted shows Julie's first tattoo on me (flower) and the most recent one (bee) and I only ever leave feeling more impressed with each visit.

Fantastic experience: I got my first tattoo last week and I couldn't have asked for a more positive experience. Sean was my artist and as soon as I entered the door I was greeted with a huge excited smile. Sean was unbelievably adaptive and responsive to my needs and input about what I wanted and was happy to make exactly what I wanted while still giving professional advice. The design and tattoo came out better than I thought it possible to be. I was incredibly nervous and Sean was amazing at helping me through the process. He was informative at every step and his passion was infectious. I think that was the single best quality shown, passion. So often people visit shops and businesses and never see even a modicum of the passion that Sean expressed. It was really inspiring and genuinely made me want to get a second tattoo that day haha. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life, not only because I have an amazingly done tattoo permanently on my body, but because of the immensely positive vibes and passion that just radiated from Sean and the tattoo shop itself. Thank you Sean! You're an absolute Beauty.

He made sure to take his time and had ideas as to wear to place them on my arms so everything was cohesive. We also chatted and laughed a lot. It was a good first impression and the staff made me feel super comfortable. The atmosphere is great. Tons of beautiful artwork on the walls which displays their immense talent. Some shops I've encountered over the years aren't super friendly and/or accepting of what you're looking for. I will definitely continue to give my business to Electronic Umbrella and would highly recommend him or anyone else there for your next tattoo

Fantastic experience: I've had lovely work done from two artists here now. Clean shop and personable talented staff. Shop minimum for small tattoos is very reasonable. A friend who I went with also got tattooed and passed out briefly (no fault of the shop) and the staff were considerate offering water and checking in on us while taking a break from the tattoo as she recovered.

Fantastic experience: Being out of province, and bored i decided it was time for more ink. From the first message, I was already pleased. They booked me in immediately, and the pricing is so good for the amazing quality tattoo you’ll receive. Going through the albums of the artists from Electric, I decided that anyone of these Artists would be awesome, and I’d come out with a great tattoo. But what I didn’t expect was Ross. He is a sweetheart (accent definitely helps ) but more than that he talks you through each step, the idea he has for the finer details. He checks in regularly to make sure that you are doing good. He’s gentle, and all around a joy. He takes his work seriously, and the absolute talent he has is mind blowing!! I am a black and white tattoo person and he made sure to make the details and shading standout. I am in love with my Pikachu tattoo and it is all because of Ross! recommend him !

Fantastic experience: All artist and staff are really friendly and talented. Very clean and a warm happy vibe as you walk in the door. Three years and running I've been going to this shop I personally can't see any reason for this not to be a one stop shop for all sorts of styles and work.

I've got two tats from Cody and I could not have imagined a nicer human! He got the job done FAST and was gentle handed the entire time. He's been in the biz for 15 years and it shows in the work he does. I've also gotten tattooed by Sean and he is the sweetest as well. THANK YOU. I will be coming back here until my skin is covered.

Fantastic experience: Had a wicked first experience here. Called the shop, they got me in for same day to do a little memorial tattoo for a very recent passing. Sean made the process rad and the tattoo he whipped up couldn’t have been any better. 10/10, they truly care about their artwork. I’ll be calling them back in the very near future! Fantastic experience: I came into EU and met Brittany for my first tattoo and after that I was hooked. She knew exactly how I wanted things and does a beautiful fast job. The prices aren’t that bad either! I’m now on my second piece with her and I couldn’t be happier. All of the artists are so fun and amazing at their job and they make you feel so welcome. They play awesome music and display sick art on the walls. I can’t wait to come back for more i love this place!

He worked with us to come up with exactly what me and my partner were looking for.
