Fantastic experience: I drove 6 hours to get tattooed by Grim and it was worth every mile!! Grim is a phenomenal artist that made my vision come to life in ways that exceeded my expectations! From booking my appointment to leaving with my favorite tattoo, my experience at Black Hive Ink was great.

Fantastic experience: Today my boyfriend got a neck tattoo, he went to a place prior won’t say the place because I’m not looking to bash them online. But the quote was 508. With a much smaller tattoo. And they were rude!! Not to mention they said and rising with the price.. He’s came to black hive twice prior and said hey let just check in here because they’re good (des and Chris worked on him Prior) and they work with you. 350 later, and a great experience, we’re happy. Lalo did such a great job, he was kind, and made him and I feel comfortable. He did such a great job on the design and we’re looking to go back for him to finish his neck tattoo. This is a great establishment, they work with you and care. Hands down a 10/10 experience. Not to mention the lady up front was great and made everything comfortable and answered all our questions. Looking to book myself a tattoo appointment next month with you guys! Lalo we’re coming back for more !!!

Negative experience: I was genuinely excited to get my tattoo. I’ve been waiting several months, paid my $200 deposit back in mid‑December, and fully expected this to be the day everything came together. How naïve of me… Louie G had blocked off the entire day for my session, and I was looking forward to collaborating in person. Honestly, I wish he had created the design beforehand so I could review it, especially since I had already submitted multiple reference photos. The concept was deeply personal: I wanted my brother depicted as a pharaoh and my mother as Nefertiti—two portraits blended into one cohesive piece across my chest, with my last name, written in hieroglyphics between them. When I arrived on time for my 10 AM appointment, the artist immediately asked me to resend the photos, which made it clear he hadn’t prepared anything in advance. As we talked, he explained that he uses AI to generate his tattoo designs. He began uploading my brother’s and mother’s photos into the software, adjusting the images until they resembled the real faces. My brother’s likeness came out fairly well, but my mother’s did not. Most of her photos show her smiling, and the two clearer ones I found were blurry. The AI couldn’t capture her essence at all. I even called my mother for new pictures—an ordeal in itself—and provided them, but the results still weren’t right. While all this was happening, I asked him about his artistic background, training, and experience with portrait work. His answers were vague and uninspiring. I had already researched the shop and reviewed his portfolio on Instagram, which looked decent, but it became obvious that what I wanted was beyond his skill level. When I asked what he did before AI, his response was just as empty, which only increased my frustration. Relying on AI to create a portrait tattoo—especially one this meaningful—is wild to me. True artistry requires the ability to interpret, sketch, and sculpt an image from reference, not just trace or copy whatever an algorithm spits out. Templates are normal in tattooing, but the artist still needs to understand form, shading, and expression. What I witnessed didn’t reflect that. In the end, I chose not to proceed. I couldn’t risk having something so permanent, so personal, done by someone who wasn’t prepared and couldn’t produce the level of artistry I needed. Losing the deposit was better than living with a tattoo that didn’t honor my family. I trust my own discernment, and this experience taught me exactly what questions to ask and what expectations to set as I continue searching for the right artist. Only positive is the front desk staff are kind and professional and the facility is clean. Other than that trash.

Fantastic experience: My oldest daughter just turned 18 and she wanted a tattoo so I told her that we will get a daddy/daughter tattoo. I chose Black Hive because my youngest daughter got a few piercings there and received great service. I told my daughter that I would get the same design as her so she picked a hibiscus flower...not the most masculine choice but it is something that bonds my daughter and I. She showed the artist a design from Instagram and 15 minutes later the stencils were ready. My artist was Cris who appearantly is a guest artist from Connecticut and my daughter had Samantha. Both were very personable and extremely professional. Both artists had light touches which made the experience very relaxing and stress-free. In the end we are both very happy with our tattoos and the overall experience is something that we will remember and cherish. Oh, the prices were more than reasonable so the value for what we got is very high. I'll definitely get my next tattoo there and more than likely will request Samantha as she understands the vision and subject matter for what I want done.

Fantastic experience: Jenna did an amazing job I decided to gift my husband a tattoo for Christmas. It was a custom tattoo, I just gave her the idea of what my husband wants and she delivered. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: We were there today 11/11/25 for my son's first tattoo. From the moment we walked in we had a great experience. We were greeted with a smile, it was clean, and very welcoming. He worked with Jenna and she was amazing!!!! He started the process via text and they made the whole process easy!! Thank you for a great experience.

Negative experience: What a waste of time. I showed up before they even opened to get a flash tattoo and wasted all morning and afternoon. After hours of waiting we were told there were 8 people ahead of us and would be about 45 mins to a hour wait. I left for a bit to do some things and came back, and now somehow there are 15 people ahead of me? Makes zero sense. If you can’t keep track of the line or be fair about it, then don’t give people numbers. Totally unorganized and frustrating experience. And I know I didn’t lose my spot for leaving because they were sending everyone text messages letting them know they were next and I never received a message.

Fantastic experience: Black hive is an awesome shop very professional, clean and great people. LouieG did a great job and would recommend him to anyone looking for a black and Grey tattoo.

Fantastic experience: Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Savannah answer all our questions and helped set up the appointment. She was there all day during the appointment for anything we needed. Louie G was awesome and did great work. It was such a beautiful piece!

Fantastic experience: I got to work with Louie G at the Raleigh Tattoo Convention and was not disappointed! He absolutely lived up to his reputation. I couldn't be any happier with the work of art he gave me. Getting to meet a lot of the people from Black Hive there was a pleasure, too! They are an awesome group of people and are extremely talented. I highly recommend them!

Fantastic experience: This is one of the nicest, cleanest shops I have ever been to. The staff are great. Giving a major shoutout to their artist Des! I have known Des for over 2 decades. Her artistry and creativity are top notch. She recently did a piece for me and was awesome! This shop gets the highest marks.

Fantastic experience: Although I didn’t visit the shop, I was tattooed and pierced at their free event at Bulldog Harley! I wanted to share that the gentleman that did my flash tattoo took an extra second to add a little shading to match the sleeve I’m working on. That extra effort made a difference in the look but also made me feel like they really enjoy doing what they do. Despite having a crazy line to work through, everyone was thoughtful in what they were doing and kind to guests. I heard them repeating after care kindly all day! Even the piercer talked everyone through what she was doing and helped a girl who fainted. Kindness goes a long way, thank you guys for making the event worthwhile and fun!

Positive experience: TLDR: Studio is nice, Chino is a great artist, price is a bit high Place overall is clean, friendly staff, super easy to work with, easy to make appointments and get started. Worked with Chino on part 1 of a full black/grey realism sleeve, he did a great job and at a solid pace. Best I’ve had done in the past 8 years. Beyond just the tattooing, Chino was great at working with me on the design to make something that looks great and is unique. Only downside was price was a bit high, roughly averaged to about $350/hr. I went in expecting closer to around $250, but didn’t ask up front so that’s on me. Didn’t argue the price because the work was great, and I’ll definitely come back to finish the sleeve. Be prepared to spend a good amount, but you won’t be disappointed in the final product

Fantastic experience: Back again!! New tattoo (Tree of Life) by Des! Absolutely perfect, beautiful, exactly what I wanted! Des even threw in some color on the leaves! She was super helpful on placement and size, friendly and patient! As always, the establishment is beautifully kept! Kate, at the front desk, is amazingly helpful and friendly as well. Highly, HIGHLY recommend this place!! Got an awesome tattoo done by Rene today! Not only was he super patient with me (as I tend to be difficult), but my tattoo came out EXACTLY as I pictured in my head! It was exactly what I hoped it would be. Huge praise for Rene!! He was friendly, personable and professional. I would highly recommend him to anyone and hope to have more work done by him in the future.

Fantastic experience: Des did a wonderful job! Definitely one of my coolest ones yet. With the vibrancy of the colors, along with the addition of UV reactive ink, I couldn't be happier. :)

Fantastic experience: The studio was spotless, and each artist has a new rolling tool chest to organize their supplies and equipment. The artists were very respectful and extremely talented. Make sure you bring cash to avoid a 10% processing fee. I highly recommend Zierra. He did my 15.5 hr throat tattoo.

Lovely and personable she was quick to get me checked in and answer any questions. Jenna Jones was my artist! She was rambunctious yet reserved and her energy was unmatched to any artist I’ve worked with before. All of her flash was insanely awesome and she came highly recommended. My hotdog dragon came out superb and I’m very stoked to rock such a niche piece of hers. I really enjoyed my visit and look forward to returning for more ink! In a town saturated with tattoo shops and a lot of competition, there’s really no one competing with the prevalence of quality exuding from this stylish shop off S Raeford Rd.

Fantastic experience: Chino took the image in my head and put it on my arm exactly the way I pictured. He was quick (almost a full half sleeve in just over 6 hours), his prices are reasonable, and he is A GENIUS. Everyone there was really friendly and the whole place is just a vibe

I’ve never been to a tattoo shop with such kind and genuine people which it really made the whole experience so comfortable and enjoyable. My tattoo artist, Jesse, was absolutely phenomenal. He listened so carefully to exactly what I wanted and brought the design to life perfectly. His patience and attention to detail were unmatched, and he made the entire process so easy (and surprisingly painless!). Fantastic experience: I wanted to post this one Facebook but it wouldn't let me. Where do I begin, setting up an appointment with Kate was super easy. She's so friendly and explains everything to a T. Then meeting with Louie was quick. He explained the process and was honest and informative. I stood longer since I came from 2.5 hours away and got a tattoo from Chris D. And let me tell you!!! He was freaking awesome!!! Never once did he make me feel uncomfortable or didn't listen to what I wanted. He made my tattoo even better than I envisioned. Jesse was funny too. Can't forget him. I can't remember the other two girls names but the whole vibe was comfort and fun. Best part for me was hearing so many people speaking Spanish, which made me miss home. Best shop ever, can't wait to go back in January.

Fantastic experience: My sister & I live on opposite sides of the world, and anytime we’re able to get together, we get a new tattoo. My sister booked our appt with Chris, and we had a fabulous experience! The shop was super clean, front desk staff was professional & friendly, and Chris did a superb job. This was hands-down my easiest tattoo; I felt almost nothing. It healed beautifully with no bleeding, almost no swelling, and absolutely no pain. Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience from start to finish. Chino created an incredible color photorealistic animal piece. He has great artistic expertise and produced something incredibly beautiful and unique. There are very few artists who can achieve color photorealism at his level. I look forward to my next sessions to complete the full leg piece. Black Hive Ink was a pleasure to be tattooed at. Kate is always happy to see me and makes sure all my needs are being met. The whole team would come to check in on me and even went to the store to get me a soda! I was grateful for conversations with Chris while at the most painful parts of my tattoo! Fantastic experience: I've been meaning to leave a review - I had my tattoo done a while back (I think it was September 10th). Rene was my artist. The dude did an awesome job! It was my first tattoo, and the experience was really good. Rene sat me down a few days prior to go over the design. I knew I wanted the millennium puzzle with the chain. Rene found a better-looking chain and made it to show one of the chain links slightly over the top. He's detail-oriented and goes into the smallest details to ensure you get the design you want. He's also very passionate about his work. At the end of the tattoo session, he asked me to make sure he didn't miss anything. While I was overly impressed, he found a spot or two he believed needed more black or white to it. Whenever I decide what I want next I'm definitely hitting these guys up again!

Fantastic experience: Went to black hive ink last Saturday for my first tattoo. I've been speaking with them for awhile about the design and they were beyond helpful and understanding. Rene did an amazing job and I couldn't thank him enough. Definitely recommend anybody who wants a tattoo to go to them. They care and take great pride in putting art on your skin.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been to our fair share of studios to get our tattoos because we could never find THE one. We've found it in Black Hive. They're professional and friendly. The studio is comfortable and inviting and, man, the artists are unbelievably talented. Chino spent time with my husband, talking about his ideas for the tattoo to make sure it was going to work on his body and my husband would leave happy. Not only that, but Chino took the time to talk about future tattoo plans and peek at reference photos, which really floored us because no artist had been willing to do that in our experience. Fantastic experience: I had the best experience at Black Hive Ink and Art, probably better than most other tattoo studios I've visited. When emailing for an inquiry, I was contacted right away and from there the communication was great. I also like the deposit paying process, though I will say, it should be mentioned there is a $10 processing fee, I was unaware of. Upon arrival I met with my artist Rene, our day of consultation was fantastic, knowing my input on my piece was just as important as his ideas was very refreshing and also very comfortable. It felt as if I've known him for longer than a few minutes lol. My tattoo turned out better than I could've thought it would, I choose the best artist for the job. This is a piece I've wanted for so long. I will most definitely be back...hopefully soon. THANKS!!!

Fantastic experience: Violet and the Black Hive family are the best tattoos artists and professionals probably in all of North Carolina. Extremely easy to book and communicate with. Very professional and I can’t even begin to describe how amazing Violet’s work is. She took a previous design I had and elevated it to another level! Fantastic experience: My new favourite shop in NC! Contacted Jo a few weeks ago about getting a piece done on my forearm. She was incredibly helpful and understanding as to what I wanted done and recommending an artist to bring it to life! I ended up working with the artist Chino and I hope I get to work with him again. Fantastic experience: First time going here and it was for a first responder flash tattoo. I was very impressed with the shop and employees who made us feel very welcome and did an amazing job on the tattoo. One of the artists use to be a paramedic which made it even better for us as he quizzed us as we were getting tattooed (we’re EMTs in school for paramedic). Will definitely be going back for more!

Fantastic experience: My husband and I got two matching tattoo and they came out sweet with very sharp clean lines! We had Melynn as a tattoo artist and this women is absolutely amazing. The experience is welcoming as well. I laughed and just couldn’t ask for a better time. Plus we had a last minute appointment but my babysitter tapped out so my kids sat well waiting and the front ladies feed my kids. That was a total plus! I’m so thankful for that act of kindness!!!

Fantastic experience: Had the best experience at Black Hive Ink recently. I went with my mom to get one of her 1st tattoos and received nothing but the best service. Was greeted by Katelynn at the front desk as soon as we walked in. She was very helpful with any questions we had and matched us with the tattoo artist best suited for what we wanted. Melynn was the artist that did my tattoos, I got 2 smaller tattoos that day. Both tattoos are even more amazing than what I could have imagined. She was so nice and easy to talk to which is great since you’re sitting there for a couple hours. If I could give her 10 stars, I would. I’m in love with my pieces and will definitely be going back to her and recommending her to anyone who asks. I also want to mention my moms tattoo artist, Violeta. As I mentioned it was my moms 1st bigger piece and I don’t think she could have asked for anyone better. She was able to do exactly what my mom wanted, of course with some suggestions to make it the best. And you know it’s not the easiest to try to change a mothers mind, but my mom is so happy with her tattoo that we will definitely be back to Black Hive Ink. Thank you so much for a day we will always remember!

Fantastic experience: I got this tattoo in memory of our pup that recently passed. Making the appointment was easy and Rene is the BEST!! The atmosphere in the shop is very laid back and comfortable. Comfortable as well are their chairs and tables for positioning. No sore muscles from being twisted here!! My wife got the same tattoo a week earlier as a walk in and again it was smooth sailing. Rene tattooed my Dad just before me and then we set up an appt for my Mom the following week. Hers is still very fresh in the photo. Staff are friendly and accommodating and got my Mom in quickly. Our cousin even got at tat!!! Family affair! We will definitely be repeat customers!!!

Fantastic experience: Louie G created, placed, and tattooed an incredible Edward scissorhands portrait on my arm. He worked around existing sleeve work and incorporated it perfectly. You won’t find a better portrait, hyper realism artist around. Awesome staff, super clean studio, priced right for insanely good work. Thrilled to have found this place. Worth the two hour drive for me, no question.

Fantastic experience: Got me in relatively fast for my tattoo. Artist didn't really talk much, but I was half asleep anyways. Line work is amazing and you can definitely tell the difference in this piece and one of my other pieces done by a chop shop
